The firm’s architectural timeline began in 1983, when it practiced under the style of Tunas Arkikek, and then in 1989, a new partnership was formed known as Arkitek Syed Ahmad Ibrahim. In 2006, a corporate set up was established under the name of SYED AHMAD IBRAHIM ASSOCIATE ARCHITECTS SDN BHD. In 2021, the firm was renamed to Arkitek SARIM Sdn. Bhd.
ARKITEK SARIM SDN BHD underwent a strategic rebranding in late 2021, with incorporation and approval from Lembaga Arkitek Malaysia. The new name combines the initials of its partners, Syed Ahmad (SA) and Raja Izam Mansur (RIM). "SARIM," derived from Arabic, embodies qualities of strength, courage, decisiveness, generosity, and acumen—attributes that reflect the firm's enduring legacy spanning over five decades in the architectural industry.
Our Philosophy is based on the presiding nature of man and its interaction with revealed knowledge which are mirrored in the Creation. The design philosophy of this firm reflects on God’s creation where nature is an endless source of inspiration. The sense of order, simplicity, and symbolic expression can generate meaningful concepts and ideas adaptable to the built environment and would be harmonious to the society.
Such Order is manifested as the pattern inherent in nature, reflecting God’s customary way of action (ṭabī’ah). Ṭabī’ah, being literally stems from the root word t-b-’a means simply a ‘stamp’, which assumes that reality is created in its own predetermined pattern, held by the geometrical proportion, in harmony with its surroundings. These patterns construct symbols that demand audiences so that its meaning is known. Therefore, reading these symbols reflects a condition of an open book (kitāb), such that nature are the words (‘ayāt’), a sign, an endless source for reflection, inspiration and comprehension. The right displacement of these signs and symbolism to its proper places can generate goodness and consonance which in turn, disseminates positive energy thus resulting in a balanced sustainable built environment for humanity.
Order is identified as the pattern manifested in nature held in proportion to its predetermined place. Thus from this, springs the ‘expression’ which forms continuity ie. Linking ideas and expression effectively reduces everything complex to a symbol. It is the simplicity which reflects the most essential element, distinguishing architectural design from other ideas of learning and adapting from tradition and nature (which surrounds us) producing in its wake a domain which is not only conductive as well as economic to build and maintain.
This, inherent in all creation, is pursued fervently, and adopted here as the basis of good and sensitive design actualization. We incorporate this in almost all our design works.
In architecture, since the primary concern is Man, you can see how it radially branches off and seeps into other fields; sociology, psychology, philosophy. It involves culture, religion, these are the guiding principles. Its about space, climate, environment. You must know all these things to solve the problem of human comfort. Humans have physical needs, and also psychological needs. But we must qualify some things here, when it comes to the environment. You must complement the Green of the world, not to the whim and fancy of Man. We shall affirm here that Beauty is a need, a human need. Not in the superficial sense, in the sense that it relates to the principle of creation. Not merely well-proportionate, but it goes to the realm of the abstract.
